One — An idea worth testing

An idea worth testing

Petalby began with a question rather than a plan: why is choosing a gift so often the least enjoyable part of giving one?

The answer, mostly, is that choosing well is hard. It takes time nobody has, and knowledge most of us have no reason to hold. So we default to the safe thing, the obvious thing, the thing that will do — and the person opening it can usually tell.

Petalby exists to take that work on. Not to remove the thought, but to put more of it in than any of us has time to give.

Two — What earns a place

What earns a place

Every piece we consider has to answer three questions. Is it genuinely good of its kind? Would we be pleased to receive it ourselves? And does it sit well beside the others in the composition?

Most things don't survive that. We turn down far more than we take, which is the only part of this work that really matters. A coffret is not a container to be filled — it is a composition, and the discipline is in what we leave out.

We favour naturally derived formulations, materials chosen to last, and finishes that reward a second look. Where something has a story worth telling, we tell it. Where it doesn't, we simply choose better.

Three — Where it comes from

Where it comes from

We are a curation house, not a manufacturer. Most of what we send was made by someone else — small British makers, established skincare houses, workshops whose work we admire.

Some of that stock reaches us because it is surplus: excellent pieces that were over-produced, discontinued or displaced by a change of season. Finding those and giving them a second life is one of the more satisfying parts of the work, and one of the more responsible. Good things should not go to landfill for want of someone to look for them.

We say this plainly because it is a strength rather than something to manage. Careful buying is a craft in its own right, and it is the craft this business is actually built on.

Four — Kept from you, deliberately

Kept from you, deliberately

The mystery is not a gimmick, and it is not a way of moving stock we couldn't otherwise shift.

It is the point. A gift you chose yourself is a transaction. A gift chosen for you, well, is something else — it carries the judgement of the person who chose it. Keeping the contents unrevealed until the moment of opening is what preserves that.

It also asks something of you: a small act of trust. We take that seriously, and every standard on this page exists to be worthy of it.

Five — Composed to order

Composed to order

Not every occasion suits a surprise. When you need something specific — a wedding, a milestone, a gesture to a client or a team — we compose to order.

Tell us the occasion, the person and the scale, and we will put something together and show you before anything is made. There is no minimum and no template.

The standard is the same one applied everywhere else: nothing included that hasn't earned its place.

“Unwrap the unexpected.”

What we believe

Quiet is not the absence of luxury. It is the discipline of it.

We measure our work less by what we've added than by what we've had the confidence to leave out — in what goes into each coffret, in materials, and in how much we tell you before it's in your hands.

How we work

Three commitments

Considered, never generic

Every item — a candle, a notebook, a skincare miniature, a small considered object — is chosen for genuine usefulness or delight, never because it was cheap to bulk-buy.

Composed, not filled

A coffret is a composition, not a container. Each is assembled by hand against a defined standard for its scale, one at a time.

Where we source

We work with small makers, stationers, skincare formulators and homeware suppliers who care as much about restraint as we do, rather than chasing the fastest or cheapest supply chain.
