Our smallest Curated Collection, and the one that has to work hardest. Drawn from a range of categories across our shelves, and unrevealed until it is opened.
Chosen with the same care as the largest box. The quietest way to meet Petalby, and no less considered for it.
The standard this box is held to
Every piece answers four questions before it earns its place: good of its kind, judged against the alternatives we set aside; something we would be glad to receive ourselves; sits well beside the others; never filler.
A composition that does not hold together is taken apart and made again. The Petalby Standard, in full.
- One pair of hands. Every collection is put together by one person and checked as a whole before it is packed.
- Never filler. Nothing goes in unless it earns its place. The Petalby Standard.
- No surprises at checkout. Free UK delivery on every order. 30 days to change your mind.
Our promise
What we promise before you order
A mystery Curated Collection is composed piece by piece by someone who has handled the alternatives and set most of them aside, and the finished box is looked over as one thing before it is packed. What you are buying is that judgement, and nothing is included to fill space.
If it arrives damaged, or something inside is not what it should be, tell us and we will replace it or refund it — whichever suits you better. Our Promise, written down.
The Petalby Standard
Four questions, asked of every piece
- Good of its kind. Not adequate — good, judged against the alternatives we set aside. A piece we made ourselves is held to it just as strictly.
- Something we would be glad to receive ourselves. If the answer is not an immediate yes, it does not make the cut.
- Sits well beside the others. A composition, not a container.
- Never filler. A smaller box of three good things over a fuller one padded with a fourth that doesn’t belong.
You will always receive pieces drawn from a range of categories across our shelves, chosen against each other for how well they sit together.
You will never receive novelty filler, duplicate pieces, or anything applied to skin that we did not make and that did not come from UK-market wholesale or a maker already selling in Great Britain.
What is inside a Bud
A few things, chosen properly. Not a drawerful of odds and ends chosen quickly.
A Bud draws from a range of categories across our shelves. Which pieces arrive is the part you do not know until it is opened.
That is a deliberate shape rather than a budget one. At £22 the easy thing is to pad a box with sachets and call it generous, and a gift made of miniatures reads as a gift made of miniatures. So a Bud is a small number of pieces at sizes worth using, bought from UK wholesale or from makers already on the GB market, in the ivory vessel, packed by hand.
The one we photographed
The Bud on this page is worth naming piece by piece, because it shows the sort of thing a small box is asked to carry — more pieces than any single Bud holds, so you can see the shelf it draws from.
- A soy candle in a clear glass jar, cork-lidded, with a kraft tag at the neck. Linen-fresh rather than sweet — the scent you would want in a room you have just tidied.
- An amber glass diffuser with natural rattan reeds and a few stems of dried gypsophila, which is the piece that keeps working long after the rest is used up.
- A pressed-flower wax tablet, scalloped and hung on a ribbon — a daisy and a frond of fern set into the wax. It goes in a drawer or on a hanger and scents cloth rather than air.
- A rolled cotton cloth, waffle-woven and tied with jute twine.
- A small bottle of fragrance oil, rose and musk, in dark glass with a screw cap.
- A soap wrapped in tissue, with a pressed flower set into the paper.
No single Bud carries all of these, and yours will not be these pieces — that is the whole arrangement — but it will be chosen with the same eye, at sizes worth using.
How a Bud is chosen
At this size every piece has to carry the box on its own, because there is nowhere for a weak one to hide. A Bud is composed against the same standard as the largest size and checked as a whole before it is packed; one that does not hold together is taken apart rather than sent.
We buy in small quantities from UK wholesale and from makers whose products are already on the GB market, which is what makes it possible to choose a piece because it is right rather than because there is a pallet of it. How a composition is made, in full.
One thing worth saying plainly: delivery is free on a Bud, as it is on everything. Orders start at £20, so a Bud clears that on its own. We would rather you read that here than work it out at the till.
When a Bud is the right answer
The Bud suits the occasions where a larger gift would sit awkwardly — where you want to be thoughtful without making the recipient feel they owe you something back.
- Secret Santa and office gifting, where the budget is fixed and everyone can see what everyone spent.
- A thank-you — to a neighbour who took the parcels in, a teacher at the end of term, someone who did you a favour they did not have to.
- Someone you like but do not know well. A Curated Collection is unusually good at this: you are giving the surprise, not guessing their taste in front of them.
- Trying the format. If mystery gifting is new to you, £22 is a sensible way to find out whether you enjoy it before you spend more on it.
When to choose something larger
A Bud is the smallest of the three. If the occasion needs to feel like an occasion — a birthday, a milestone, a gift several people are putting into — it will look modest, and no amount of good curation changes that.
The Bloom at £42 is composed to sit together, and is the size to choose when the gift should feel like an occasion. The Bouquet at £74 is the fullest, with one piece reserved for this size alone.
And if the recipient would rather choose their own things, a mystery box is the wrong format entirely. The Spa Edit states exactly what each set contains.
What happens after you order
- The order. Stripe takes payment and a confirmation email follows once it has. Delivery is free on every order. We deliver to addresses in the UK, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
- The composing. One person puts your Curated Collection together by hand in the UK, and nothing is packed until the whole box has been looked at together.
- On its way. A second email arrives as soon as your order leaves us, with a tracking number if Royal Mail has issued one.
- The opening. Nothing is revealed until it is unwrapped. You have 30 days to change your mind, for any reason — see delivery and returns.
