The house rule
The Petalby Standard
Every piece has to answer four questions before it earns its place. They are not new — they have been on our About and Promise pages since the beginning — but they deserve a name and a page of their own, because they are the whole of how a Petalby composition is made.
- Good of its kind. Not adequate — good, judged against the alternatives we set aside. Most of the work is deciding what to leave out, and a piece we made ourselves is held to it just as strictly. Making something ourselves is not a reason to include it.
- Something we would be glad to receive ourselves. If the answer is not an immediate yes, it does not make the cut — and it does not matter how well it would sell.
- Sits well beside the others. A composition, not a container: a scent that does not fight the one already in the box; a palette that looks intended when the tissue comes off.
- Never filler. A smaller box of three good things will always leave us in preference to a fuller one padded with a fourth that doesn’t belong.
On the mystery Curated Collections
You will always receive pieces drawn from a range of categories across our shelves, chosen against each other for how well they sit together.
You will never receive novelty filler, duplicate pieces, or anything applied to skin that we did not make and that did not come from UK-market wholesale or a maker already selling in Great Britain.
A composition that does not hold together is taken apart and made again. That is not a slogan; it is the reason we do not take requests, and the reason no two Collections are quite alike.
The thinking behind the Standard is on our About page; the promises that sit around it are on Our Promise.
“Unwrap the unexpected.”
