The end of the day

2 of 3 pieces here are in stock.

A named set composed to sit together, a 100ml eau de toilette in glass, or the mystery collection that keeps its contents to itself. The Sanctuary lists exactly what it holds; The Bloom does not, and its pieces are chosen against each other before it is packed.

The wider shelf is Petalby Spa, and every composed set is gathered on the Spa Edit.

What changes between £25 and £50

Not more things. Better ones.

Below £25 the honest move is to buy one small thing properly made. Between £25 and £50 the choice widens to objects with some engineering in them: a lamp that recharges over USB, a cast block that gives solitary bees somewhere to nest, a collar cut from Harris Tweed and lined in cotton.

It is also the band where a composed set becomes possible rather than a compromise. If the figure is firmer than that, gifts under £25 holds only things at or below £25.

Made over several evenings

A squirrel in a 7in hoop, a felt appliqué in jade, terracotta and mustard, and a rope box with three patterns and 60m of cotton-blend cord. Kits sized so that finishing them is realistic rather than aspirational.

Petalby Crafts looks for kits that assume nothing of you and include enough material to finish the thing twice, and the shelf is stocked.

Above and below this page

The Bouquet sits above £50 on the shop page; the fuller Spa Edit sets are on the Spa Edit. Below it, gifts under £25 is drawn to the same honest line.

Birthday gifts sorts this stock by relationship, and gifts for her sorts it by habit.

Light, in various disguises

A frosted mason jar that charges itself in a window, a machined aluminium pencil that lights when you press the eraser, a moulded book that holds your page and the room, and a porcelain chamberstick you can lift out and carry. Four ways to avoid the overhead bulb.

All from named design houses and bought on the UK market, in Petalby Tech.

For a garden actually in use

A heavyweight cotton apron with two deep pockets and a leather tool loop, a cast nesting block made with recycled Cornish china clay waste, and a planter with the same nesting holes built into its base. Things that stay outside and improve for it.

Petalby Garden keeps to the tools and the objects, never living plants.

For the dog

Harris Tweed on a collar, a metre of the same cloth on a lead, and a padded blanket with sherpa fleece one side and red ticking the other, tied with cotton ribbons for the car or the pub.

Bought together they read as a set without being sold as one. They are from Petalby Pets, where nothing on the shelf is eaten.

For the table on a wet Saturday

Four games in one FSC-certified box with a sliding lid, a 48-piece farm with fencing that moves, and a tipping board that punishes a heavy hand. No batteries in any of it, which is deliberate.

Petalby Play buys UK-market stock with the safety marking and age labelling still on the box.
