What it is
A planter with a bee house built into its base: eleven and a half centimetres of cast concrete cube, planted on top and nested in underneath. Most British bee species are solitary rather than hive-dwelling, and this gives them somewhere to lay. It does two things in the footprint of one.
Cast from concrete containing up to 75% waste material from the Cornish china clay industry, and weighing 2.4 kilograms. Supplied empty, so what goes in the top is yours to decide. Made by Green&Blue.
Siting is the part that matters: it is best in a warm, south-facing spot a metre or so off the ground. A wall top, a shelf on a fence, the corner of a raised bed. Safe to keep where children and pets go, because solitary bees have no hive to defend.
At 2.4 kilograms it is not something you will want to move often, so settle on the spot before you plant it. For a courtyard, a balcony, or a small garden where a full-size bee house would be one object too many. A present for someone who gardens in pots.
