What it is
One job, done properly. Press the polished stainless point into the soil, drop in the seed or the bulb, close the hole behind it. A dibber is the tool that turns sowing from a scrabble into something you do sitting down.
The head is mirror-polished, which is what lets it slide through soil rather than dragging it. The handle is waxed FSC beech, joined to the head with a brass ferrule. It measures 24.5 centimetres long and 2.5 centimetres across.
Polished steel gives damp earth little to cling to. It arrives in a gift box and carries a ten-year guarantee against manufacturing faults. Part of the Sophie Conran range, made by Burgon & Ball.
For sowing into trays on a kitchen table as much as for working along a row, and for putting bulbs in during autumn without kneeling on wet grass longer than you must. It suits someone who has been making holes with a finger, a pencil or the handle of something else. A small, complete present that needs nothing else alongside it.
