What it is

A short trowel with a deeply dished head, which matters more than it sounds: the dish carries a proper measure of soil to the hole instead of half of it to the path. Mirror-polished stainless steel, so it comes out of the shed in March looking much as it did in October. It does one job and does it without ceremony.

The handle is waxed FSC beech with a brass ferrule where it meets the blade. 26.5 centimetres long and 8 centimetres across. Boxed for giving, and covered by a ten-year guarantee against manufacturing faults.

Stainless steel resists corrosion, which is the general reason a bare blade can winter in an unheated shed. Made by Burgon & Ball in Sheffield.

Good for planting out, potting on and lifting bulbs, and short enough to work in a container or a window box without swinging an elbow. The dished head suits anyone who has been moving compost a teaspoon at a time with a flat one. A first proper tool for a new gardener, or a replacement for the bent thing that came free with something else.

A small parcel tied with twine and a blank card on an oak table.

Presentation

Every order is packed by hand. Just the items, simply wrapped is how it travels unless you say otherwise, and it costs nothing. A presentation level dresses it for giving — one for the whole order, chosen in your basket.

The Sprig +£3.50: tissue wrap, ribbon, handwritten note card
The Garland +£7.50: gift box, tissue wrap, ribbon, handwritten note card, dried-botanical sprig
The Wreath +£15: keepsake rigid box or basket, shredded-paper nest, ribbon, handwritten note card, dried-botanical arrangement, wax seal

Add the handwritten card at checkout and we write your message out by hand. How we wrap.

Our promise

Every piece here is chosen on its own merits by a person who has handled the alternatives and set most of them aside. Some of what we sell we make ourselves; the rest is made by other people and chosen by us, and we say which is which.

If it arrives damaged, faulty or not as described, we replace it or refund it, and we pay the return postage. Our Promise, written down.

Not sure this is the one? The Bud is composed by hand around pieces like it, and the contents stay a secret until it is opened. If you would rather browse than decide, Gifts for him is where this one sits.
