What it is
A nesting block for solitary bees, cast to the proportions of a standard brick so it can either stand in a border or be built into a wall. Red mason and leafcutter bees find the cavities on their own; solitary bees do not swarm and do not sting. It is a block of cast concrete with holes in it, and that is the entire mechanism.
Cast concrete made with up to 75% waste material from the Cornish china clay industry. 215 by 105 by 65 millimetres, and 2.9 kilograms. Made in England, by Green&Blue.
Siting matters more than anything else here: it wants a warm, south-facing spot at least a metre off the ground. In a border it can simply stand; in a wall it lays in like any other brick, which is what the dimensions are for.
For a garden with a sunny wall and someone who has been meaning to do something about the bees. It works as well in a small courtyard as in a long border, since a metre of height and a warm aspect are the whole requirement. A present for a new gardener, or for the kind of person who reads the plaque on a bench.
