What it is
Two compartments and a waxed beech handle, which is all a trug needs to be. Twine and labels in one side, trowel and snips in the other, and the whole thing lifted down the path in one hand instead of three trips. It removes a small daily annoyance, which is most of what good garden kit does.
Galvanised steel, with a riveted brass plaque and a waxed beech handle. It measures 33.5 by 21 by 13.5 centimetres and weighs 628 grams. Each one is aged by hand, so no two carry quite the same patina.
Galvanising is a weather-resistant finish, which is the general reason it turns up on things that live in a shed. The hand-ageing also means the one that arrives will not match a photograph exactly, and is not meant to.
It ends up on the table at supper holding cutlery at least as often as it holds tools. For someone with an allotment, a greenhouse, or a long path between the two. A housewarming present that gets used the same week.
