What it is
Wool, a barbed needle and repetition: the fibres are worked until they hold each other, and after an hour or two there is an owl. British and merino wool in the bird's own colours, with step-by-step photographs rather than diagrams. Nothing to sew and nothing to glue.
Finished, it stands about fifteen centimetres. The wool, two felting needles in a case and the instructions come boxed for giving; the foam working block is a separate item, so check there is one in the house before starting.
The needles are sharp, so the maker gives this fourteen and up.
Needle felting is additive — wool goes on until the shape is right — so a thin patch is fixed by adding more rather than beginning again. With no glue there is nothing left drying between sittings, so the work can be picked up and put down as an evening allows.
For someone who likes the making more than the finished object, and for anyone who has ever wanted an owl on the windowsill.
