What it is
A farm that folds into its own box. Sixteen pieces — a farmer, a horse, a sheep, a cow, a pig, a chicken, a duck, carrots, fencing and trees — with a clasp to hold it shut and a string handle for carrying it. Putting it away is the last move of the game rather than an argument after it.
Twenty-three centimetres wide, under a kilo, in FSC-certified wood, from Bigjigs. The string handle means a child carries their own farm, and the clasp is what stops sixteen pieces becoming fifteen somewhere between the house and the car. For three years and over.
It goes into a bag for the train without an argument, and it was the best of the small farms we looked at largely because it packs itself away.
For a family that travels light, or for the grandparent who would rather keep one box on a shelf than a crate under the stairs.
