What it is

A hummingbird in layered wool-mix felt with embroidery worked over the top, finished in a nineteen-centimetre wooden hoop that is also the frame. Appliqué gives it a depth a flat design would not have — the wing sits slightly proud of the body. Around twenty centimetres finished.

Felt pieces, coordinated DMC threads, a needle, full-scale templates and a stitch guide, boxed. Full-scale templates are used as they come, with nothing to enlarge or redraw. The hoop being the frame means there is no mounting to arrange once the last stitch is in.

Made in Britain by a small Yorkshire studio.

Cutting felt, laying it down and then stitching over it is three different kinds of work in one kit, which is what makes appliqué a good change of pace for someone who usually works flat. At twenty centimetres it suits a wall where something small is wanted, or a shelf beside books.

It comes boxed, so it can be handed over as it is.
