What it is
Four small bags in natural flax linen, ten centimetres square, with bees appliquéd in gold, black and white wool-mix felt and embroidered over. The lavender is in the box — fifty grams of dried buds from a growers' cooperative in Provence — so the bags go straight into a drawer.
Light beige flax linen, twelve coordinated DMC threads, felt, a needle, filling, templates and a stitch guide. Made in Britain by a small Yorkshire studio. Nothing else has to be bought: the buds, the felt and the thread are all in the box.
Appliqué means the felt is cut, laid down and stitched over rather than worked flat, so the bees sit slightly proud of the linen. Ten centimetres square is a drawer size — between folded jumpers, in a coat pocket, at the back of a wardrobe shelf.
Four is enough to keep two and give two away. For someone who has just taken over a chest of drawers, or for a maker who would rather finish something used than something framed.
