What it is
A wooden boat with fabric sails, a string of bunting and two small passengers, Bubble and Squeak, standing on the deck. It is scaled to sit with the rest of the Merrywood Tales pieces, so the gnomes can go to sea if that is where the story has got to.
Naming the passengers does a lot of the work. A boat is a boat, but Bubble and Squeak are somebody, and somebody has to be going somewhere. The sails are fabric, so they hang and shift as the boat is carried, and the bunting gives the whole thing an occasion.
Reclaimed rubberwood, non-toxic paint, twenty-nine centimetres to the top of the mast, from Tender Leaf Toys. It is packed in cardboard, which goes straight in the recycling. For three years and over.
It works on its own and it works as an addition, which is the useful thing about a range that shares a scale. For a child already deep in a story about small people, and for the adult who has been given a part in it.
