What it is
Ten warm LEDs on a 95-centimetre string, wound onto a cork that sits in the neck of an empty bottle. Drop the string in, twist the cork, and the glass does the rest. The light gathers and spreads through it in a way a bare bulb does not.
USB rechargeable: an hour of charge for around four hours of light. Fourteen grams in total, so the bottle stays the heavy part of the arrangement. The battery is sealed inside the cork and not replaceable, which makes this one object rather than a set of parts.
Warm light rather than coloured, which is the version that disappears into a room instead of announcing itself. It suits a windowsill, a shelf of cookbooks, or the middle of a table with the overhead light off.
For someone who saves good bottles, and for the evenings when the ceiling light is too much and a candle is not quite enough.
