What it is
A herringbone wool blanket in a warm, undecided grey — closer to stone than to slate, with enough brown in it to keep a room from going cold. Grey is the easiest colour to get wrong and this one is right.
Herringbone gives the surface a fine diagonal texture that catches the light. Designed in Bristol, woven in England, from The British Blanket Company, and unfussy enough to live folded over the end of a bed all year.
Wool is why it is worth the weight. It warms quickly and stays breathable, which is what lets the same blanket work over a duvet in February and on its own in September. The weave does the rest: herringbone is a twill run in alternating directions.
We stock four colourways of the Clifton Herringbone: this warm grey, a pale sandy Bath Stone, a soft greyed green and a deep navy. For a spare room that needs finishing, a new home, or the person who always ends up cold at their end of the sofa.
Folded, it is nearly furniture. Unfolded, it is the reason nobody moves.
