What it is
Sprays of cream and white leaves climb a ground that shades from pale fawn to almost-brown — foliage caught against an evening wall, printed across six mats. It is a pattern that behaves like a neutral: busy enough to be worth a second look, quiet enough to put a plate on top of.
Six to the set, from the Denby Pottery Company in Derbyshire. Designed in England and made in China, which we would rather say here than leave to the small print. They arrive boxed, with a window cut through so the top mat shows without the lid coming off.
Six covers the whole table rather than the first four to sit down.
A quiet housewarming present, or a wedding list entry that will actually get used. And a way to make an ordinary Tuesday supper feel like it was thought about — which is most of what tableware is for.
Nothing here is asking to be noticed, which is rather the point of a placemat.
