What it is
Four rectangular mats and four coasters in plain, undyed cork — the whole table dressed in one material, with no pattern to date. Rectangular mats suit a rectangular table, which sounds obvious until you have tried to lay eight round ones and found the corners empty.
Cork handles heat, absorbs the knock of a set-down glass and wipes clean. Eight pieces to the set, undyed throughout. Made in Cornwall by LIGA from bark harvested by hand from the cork oak, a tree that is stripped and left to regrow rather than felled.
Undyed cork is the colour it is because nothing was added to it, which is also why it goes with everything and dates at the speed of a wooden spoon. Cork is light and soft as well as heat-tolerant, so a mat can go down under a hot dish without anything underneath it suffering.
For a new house, a wedding list, or a dining table that has been making do with three mismatched mats and a folded towel.
