What it is
Four cork mats in a soft olive stripe, doing the quiet job cork has always done well: taking the heat out of a dish before it reaches the table. They sit flat, they do not slide, and they wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Made by LIGA in Cornwall, from cork stripped by hand from the cork oak — a bark that grows back and is harvested again roughly every nine years. Four mats to a set. The stripe is deliberately undemanding: it gets on with whatever china you already own.
Cork is light and soft as well as heat-tolerant, which is why it has outlasted hotter-looking alternatives. Olive is a green that lives easily with wood and with plain white china.
For a table that gets used every day, a wedding list, or the household still putting hot pans down on a folded tea towel.
