What it is
Four cork coasters printed with elephants and a scattering of bananas, stacked in a cork holder so they stay together instead of migrating around the house. The drawing is loose and warm rather than cartoonish, which is the difference between a coaster you use and one you hide.
Part of LIGA's range designed with the Zoological Society of London, and made in Cornwall. Cork takes a wet glass without swelling and dries out again on its own. It is a soft material as well as a heat-tolerant one, which is why it has spent so long sitting between glasses and tables.
Four coasters and the holder they stack in — and the holder is the part worth noticing, because a set of four without one becomes three, then two, then a beer mat.
For a first flat, a housewarming, or the friend who has been asking people to use coasters for years and getting nowhere.
