What it is

Magnolia and pear — floral, with a soft fruit note underneath. It is noticeable on the skin and gone from the room within the hour, which is the right behaviour for a scent someone else chose.

A hundred millilitres of safflower and apricot kernel oil, with vitamins A and E. The bottle is glass. Made in East Sussex by The English Soap Company, for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew collection.

Warm it briefly between the palms and work it into damp skin, straight out of the bath. Oil is the unhurried option, and it suits an evening with nothing else to get to.

It suits someone who takes long baths, and anyone who already owns quite enough small jars. In a Petalby composition it is the piece we add when the box needs weight rather than another little thing. Given rather than bought, it asks nothing of the person opening it beyond a free evening.
