What it is
A low, matt-black plate on a short foot, made for the sort of cake that gets cut at the table rather than carried in on ceremony. The raised edge is shallow enough to slide a knife under a slice and high enough to keep crumbs in one place.
Matt black does something quietly useful: it makes an ordinary Victoria sponge look considered. Ceramic, from LIGA's ceramic range, made at their family workshop base in Cornwall.
The short foot lifts the plate just enough to read as a stand without taking a stand's height, which matters on a table already carrying plates and cups. Matt black is a quiet background for icing, fruit and pastry alike.
For someone who bakes on a Sunday, a birthday that will be cut at the table, or a kitchen that has everything except somewhere to put the cake.
