What it is
A puffin, printed onto cotton and waiting. The beak is the part people look forward to; the rest is blocks of colour that build up quicker than you expect, in six or so stitches the booklet explains from scratch. Printed cloth means the drawing is already settled — nothing to trace, nothing to transfer.
A seven-inch wooden hoop that doubles as the frame, DMC stranded cotton, a needle, an illustrated guide to embroidery and a stitch and colour chart, in a gift box. The hoop doing the framing means nothing needs mounting or stretching once it is finished.
Designed and made up by hand in rural Dorset.
Blocks of colour are the friendliest thing a beginner can be handed: the shape is already drawn and the stitching is only ever filling it in. Six or so stitches is a short enough list to learn as you go.
For a first kit, and for anyone with a soft spot for seabirds. It arrives boxed and can be handed over unwrapped.
