Bingo, four in a row in wood rather than plastic, shut the box with animals in place of numbers, a tower of wooden bears that falls over eventually, a tipping board with forty-four flowers to stack on it, and a compendium of snakes and ladders, noughts and crosses, draughts and tiddlywinks.
All come from Bigjigs Toys, in FSC-certified wood, and every one is labelled for three years and over.
These are the games that want a table and somebody sitting opposite. Shut the Box takes two players and about five minutes a round; the bingo works with two and a good deal better with six. Several of the boards measure twenty-eight centimetres square, and the bingo board slides behind the books on a shelf between Christmases.
The wooden toys next door are open-ended: a farm, a tea set, a family of gnomes. These have rules, and a round that ends.
