What it is
Patchouli, sandalwood, citrus and myrrh, held in deep purple tinted glass with a dark wood-look cap and a small suede-look tassel at the neck. It is the warm, settled end of home fragrance rather than the sweet end. The sort of thing that suits a hall table in October.
The reeds come with it — slim dark brown stems, bundled in their own slot beside the bottle. The whole thing sits in a gold-edged box painted with plum and cream florals, with a window cut so the bottle shows through.
Reeds draw the liquid up the stem and let it go into the air, which is why the scent arrives gradually rather than announcing itself. Turn them when you remember. There is nothing to light and nothing to put out.
Set on a hall table or a bedside, it does its work without being tended — which makes it the choice for a house where a candle would have to be watched. Boxed and windowed as it comes, it can be handed over as it is: a thank-you, or a new-home present that needs no wrapping.
