What it is
Bergamot is the bright, slightly bitter citrus of an Earl Grey top note — crisp rather than sweet. It is the fragrance for a desk at four in the afternoon, or for a bathroom shelf where something heavier would be too much.
Amber glass, palm-sized, with a ribbed gold lid and a kraft paper label naming the fragrance. Inside, 100 grams of cream wax and a single central wick, sized for a desk corner or the edge of a bath. The lid turns back on with a soft rasp of thread on glass, keeping the scent to itself between burns.
A screw lid rather than a loose one, which means the jar can go in a bag without collecting the contents of it. The glass is worth keeping, too: once the wax is finished, a jar this size ends up holding hair grips, paperclips or the change from a coat pocket.
Six fragrances in the range — bergamot, gardenia, jasmine, peppermint, strawberry and vanilla — each sold on its own, so three on a shelf is a choice rather than a compromise. A small thank-you, a stocking piece, or the thing that sits alongside something larger.
