What it is

Peppermint is the cold-edged one: clean and sharp, with nothing sweet underneath it. It is the fragrance for a desk in the middle of the afternoon, or a bathroom shelf where something sweeter would be too much.

Amber glass with a ribbed gold screw lid, and a kraft label printed with the fragrance, its number and the weight. Inside, cream wax and a single central wick — 100g, sized for a desk corner or the edge of the bath. The lid screws back on between burns, which keeps the scent to itself.

The glass is worth keeping too. A jar this size ends up holding paperclips, hair grips or the change from a coat pocket.

Six fragrances in all — bergamot, gardenia, jasmine, peppermint, strawberry and vanilla — and one jar of each. Peppermint is the one to choose for someone who finds most scented candles too sweet by half.
