What it is
Gardenia is the heady one: a warm white floral, petal-sweet, and the boldest of the six fragrances in the range — which is either the reason to choose it or the reason to choose another.
A palm-sized amber glass jar with a ribbed gold screw lid and a kraft label in loose lettering. Inside, 100g of cream wax and a single central wick, sitting just below the jar's shoulders. The lid screws back on when the evening is done, which keeps the scent to itself between burns.
A screw lid rather than a loose one, so the jar survives a drawer, a wash bag or a weekend away. The glass earns a second life as well — once the wax is finished, a jar this size takes hair grips, matches or a week of loose change.
Six fragrances in all: bergamot, gardenia, jasmine, peppermint, strawberry and vanilla, each on its own listing. Gardenia is for someone who likes a floral at full strength and has never pretended otherwise, and it works better in a hallway or a bathroom than at a dining table.
Not a subtle candle, and not trying to be.
