What it is
A small square nesting box woven from seagrass, hung on a rope with a short fall of bamboo tubes beneath it. The chimes are quiet — a low knock rather than a jangle — and the whole thing weathers to a softer colour over a season. It does two things at once, and neither of them loudly.
The box is 15 centimetres across, and the piece hangs 49 centimetres in total, from the top of the rope to the end of the chimes. It weighs 470 grams. Seagrass and bamboo, hand-made in Indonesia and held in UK stock.
Seagrass and bamboo are both natural fibres, which is why the care note reads as it does: hang it somewhere sheltered and out of the midday sun. Under the eaves, on the shadier side of a fence, or on a branch with something above it.
Good where a full-size timber box would look out of scale — a small garden, a courtyard, a balcony. For someone who likes the idea of a wind chime more than the sound most of them make. A quiet housewarming present, or a first bird box for a garden that has never had one.
