Zabzugu Handwoven Cat Basket

What it is

Handwoven in Ghana from elephant grass, in a natural monochrome pattern that comes out of the weaving rather than being printed on afterwards. Seventy-one centimetres tall and forty-six across, which makes it a piece of furniture as much as a cat bed.

Grass is breathable, light and surprisingly tough. Each basket comes out slightly different, because a person made it. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, and there is nothing else it asks for.

Monochrome, so it sits in a room without needing to match anything in it. Generous enough for a large cat to stretch out in rather than fold into.

At seventy-one centimetres it stands rather than sits, so it works in the corner of a living room where a flat bed would look like something left out. Light enough to move to whichever room has the afternoon sun in it. For the cat who has ignored three beds already, and for a household that would like the cat's furniture to look like furniture.
